The Thrills are: Conor Deasy (Vocals), Daniel Ryan (Guitar, Bass Guitar), Padraic McMahon (Guitar, Bass Guitar), Ben Carrigan (Drums) and Kevin Horan (Keyboards)' Daniel and Conor have been next door neighbours since birth. By the time they had hit 15, they decided to form a band. Padraic was drafted in as they knew his sister and it wasn't long before Kevin and Ben completed the line up that is today's The Thrills.
The band is dedicated to the Brian Wilson's of this world - people who lose the plot despite having everything - the point being 'Everything can change at anytime and frequently does'. The Beachboys are not the bands only influence, they have soaked up the early 70s feel from Burt Bacharach, Carpenters, Neil Young and Bob Dylan (there is even a lovely harmonica solo in 'Santa Cruz'). Latter day influences include Air, Beck and Super Furry Animals and the ubiquitous riot of bands such as The Libertines, The Coral, ESP and The Strokes. The Thrills don't however see themselves fitting into the latter group, in fact they don't see themselves fitting in anywhere!
Their first gig in the UK was at the request of Morrissey at The Royal Albert Hall! Phased? Not The Thrills. 'It was brilliant, we are big Smiths fans, we didn't have time to be nervous though as it all happened so quickly and hadn't had a chance to think about it" recounts Daniel.
The band is not only influenced by great music though, films play an important role, well films that you can watch over and over at any rate "Virgin Suicides is a great film, once you have seen it for the tenth time you are totally hooked! With Air, Carole King, 10CC and Todd Rungdren on the soundtrack you can't go wrong" Deer Hunter, Dog Day Afternoon and the Godfather also make the band's top 5.
Although the band hail from Dublin, they are now based in Los Angeles at their studio base,a 20 minute walk from Hollywood Boulevard. Their debut album 'So Much For The City' was a remarkable success and cemented The Thrills in most music lover's minds...their follow-up, 'Let's Bottle Bohemia' promises to be as big a success and is a real step on for the band. It hits record shops on 13th Sept 2004 so make sure you're at the front of the queue! Til then, feast yourself on the first single to be released from the album, 'Whatever Happened To Corey Haim?' released on 30th August.
