Gomez Return to the Capital in Style

Gomez - London Scala - 12/3/02

And welcome back, boys. Gomez have long been associated with retro stylings, the blueeeezzz, 70's rock-hairiness. And the people who've made these lazy accusations, based on Ben's voice and a few of the tracks from their debut (and, let's not forget folks, award-winning) album - they really should have seen Gomez tonight. Because, quite simply, they'd have been proved quite wrong.

Mainly performing tracks from new album 'In Our Gun' - and opening with comeback single 'Shot Shot' - Gomez prove they're as cutting edge as anyone, and that, truly, there is still no-one quite like them. Though it's their first gig in 18 months, the signs don't show, looking relaxed and composed, dancing, goofing around and quite obviously enjoying themselves. 'Shot Shot' is beefed up live, a jazz-funk-metal monster over in two minutes. Of the other new tracks, 'Ruff Stuff', 'Ping One Down' and 'Sound Of Sounds' (the latter replete with gorgeous Beach Boys harmonies) all stand out.  The new stuff sounds like a real progression; this is what The Coral should sound like after they've taken some music lessons.  Music that's without boundaries, and fashion. As the band themselves have said many times before, all they've wanted to do is make great music. And that's exactly what they're doing.

The crowd are kept happy with oldies 'Love Is Better Than A Warm Trombone', 'We Haven't Turned Around', and a final, inevitable encore of 'Whippin' Piccadilly' that goes down a treat, like your first ice-cream of the summer.  Great fun, great times.  Roll on Brixton…
