Daft Punk "Discovery"
The French Deo Have outdone themselves, Their new album is great, It moves me, and it may move other people, I have just seen their new Videos, and they have have done a great job on them, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo did a great job, their previous album lacked the momentem, but It is still a good album (Homework), But they couldn't of done better with Discovery, It just pulls and pulls. - from Greg
Discovery, the highly anticipated new album from the undisputed kings of dance has stormed its way toward chart success, despite very little promotion. The album has already gone gold in the UK and sold over a million copies despite only be out for 2 weeks.
Since the last album, Homework, the French duo have taken an even more electronic approach to recording. The tracks have a extremely heavy and funky electronic sound which is in part due to an alleged recording accident that left Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homo-Christo as somewhat elusive robots.
So what is the album like?
Discovery opens with the UK number two and European number one hit single, One More Time. It's an extremely contagious tune with echos of disco and wonderful synthesised vocals from Romanthony. (Ed - If you haven't heard it by now then there really is no hope for you!)
There is a certain European style disco theme that resonates throughout Discovery. The second single from the album to be released, Aerodynamic, also has a funky sound but also an air of desperation within the beat. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and Digital Love carry this same groovy edge. The latter containing a Barry Manilow sample and strangely reminiscent of a theme tune from an early children's eightites television programme.
Night Vision lends a break to Discovery after the frantic build up of Crescendolls and gives peacefullness and serenity to the album before the sharpness of Superheroes. The break is repeated with track, Something About Us. It is one of the stand out tracks from this latest album, due to its surprisingly romantic lyrics. At first listen, one could be mistaken into thinking Something About Us was by another artist, but hidden within the hushed and mellow (although unpolished) vocals is Daft Punk's trademark electronic reverberations.
Verdis Qou is a haunting track with the sound of church organs playing in huge gothic style churches and leads us in to the closing tracks, Face To Face and Too Long. Returning to an extremely upbeat finale with vocals borrowed from Romanthony and Todd Edwards, Discovery is exhilerating throughout and leaves your stereo truly in love with Daft Punk. - from Sara
