Vex Red and Crackout - Water Rats June 2001

Unfortunately a 3 piece coming on after a 5 piece is always going to have to work nearly twice as hard to make themselves heard and no matter how hard Crackout socked out the songs they still suffered a slightly diminished sound. I saw them earlier in the year at The Garage where they totally ruled but tonight's show was played out slightly in the shadow of the hype around the support. Having said that, they knock out pop-punk-rock in a way that gets in your head and punches a hole in your heart. Bouncing around like the teenagers they are, they will undoubtedly take their time, build up a fanbase and reward the faithful followers with a debut album that will renew your faith in British bands (which must surely be dented by now?)

Crackout's EP's are amongst the best of any new band I have heard this year - Smashing Pumpkins meets Nirvana meets Jane's Addiction all delivered with strength, vitality and fizz.

The drummer dresses up in a suit which contrasts hilariously against his youthful years but slick and rhythmic he holds the band together well. The lead singer has the look and a fantastic squawky vocal edge that makes him distinctive but familiar.
