Carter bugs out!

Tell us about your background and where you’re from?

JC: I’m from Laughton in Essex, which is down by Guildford. I’ve been living in London for about ten years.

Where did the inspiration come from to become a DJ?

JC: It just kind of happened. I was making music and doing sound systems and then I started putting records out. I used to go to the Heavenly Social (points at T-shirt with Socialism written on it) and I used to kick Tom and Ed (of The Chemical Brothers) off the decks at all the after parties and go on. Then I put some records out on Heavenly and they said that when the club starts up again that I should become a resident with the other guys. There was so much attention in the club that it skyrocketed!

Where did you play with Heavenly?

JC: I used to play in a place called Albany, which was a grotty pub that has by now been turned into the Firkin pub now. We were in the basement of that club and we used to play in the basement of a great little pub called Smithfield’s on the Farringdon Road. Then a grotty big pub called Turnmills and I did it for about four years.

You’re just about to release the ‘Viva Bugged Out!’ compilation but what can fans expect from this?

JC: It’s really percussion-heavy and just very summery with Latin and African influences. It’s a single CD, as I just wanted to do one CD so it’s almost like an album. It’s a 1 hour and 20 minute blast of a funky percussion workout. It’s very lively and definitely one for the barbecue.

Did you work on it on your own?

JC: Yeah, it’s just all the records that I have been collecting over the years that fit together. I have always wanted to do one quite Latin influenced set on a CD.

How did you hook up with the guys from Bugged Out!?

JC: I got given a gig when they first started working at Sankey’s Soap in Manchester and they were playing upstairs and they just loved it so they just kept giving more and more work to do. I kept getting gigs so when they took it to Liverpool, I said that they should make me a resident and they just kept saying no Jonno we can’t sorry no! Eventually they did and I’ve been resident there for about five years! It’s a wicked place to be.

And that can't be a bad thing...
