Smashing Pumpkins To Reform?
Its a funny thing when you wake up one day and realise that youre just never going to be in a world famous, top notch rocknroll group. If I could only meet the right people, THEN I would make it in a band - thats what you say. Of course, theres a period of self delusion, where the question of your own talent never comes into it. Youve just been a bit unlucky, and youve already written fifty songs better than anything Arctic Monkeys have come up with, so wheres the justice in that? So then youre one of the lucky ones, and you find a top, really great band, and you write reams of brilliant songs, then one day you wake up and its been like, twelve years or something since you started out and everyones a bit older, and you have a family. What the hell do you do then? Well if youre Billy Corgan its pretty simple really. You split your band up, spend six years in exile, then decide to get the old gang back together again (sort of). The Smashing Pumpkins are back together man!
According to a message on their official website the Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain are together writing songs for a new album, their first since 2000s MACHINA/The Machines of God. Love them or loath them (yes some people do), they rocked my tiny little world since first getting a copy of Siamese Dream on cassette tape in about 1994. Talk about life changing. Hearing Cherub Rock for the first time made me dizzy with excitement, it was my first toe into the underground man, and it wasnt even underground but still, they were cooler than Pearl Jam. Well keep you posted on this one.
Graham Coxons new song is alright too. The thing hes always been one of the best in the business at, is the understated chord change. Its his thing, and its part of the reason Blur were so damn good. Hes remained a one man riff machine, and news single You & I finds him once again, pulling cheeky little gems out of nowhere. Consider it recommended.
As you know, sometimes we like to go outside, and leave our office to go and see bands live. Not much, but sometimes, we tear ourselves away from Myspace, and The-Raft to see special bands Dinosaur Jr. is one such band. We throw our old hats in the air, and celebrate coz they reformed (proper original line up too), and are actively playing more UK dates. If you can, I reckon you should go along. They rock. Dates are as follows:
MAY 2006 21st Manchester Academy 22nd Birmingham Academy 23rd Bristol Academy
More absurd Pete Doherty news, as the singer has been arrested again. Picked up in a car with a 21 year old man on suspicion of holding class A drugs with intent to supply. Still, he still managed to play a storming gig with his band Babyshambles last week (between court appearances we assume) in Derrys Nerve Centre in front of literally two hundred screaming fans, one of which was my sister, hello sis.
Until next week, bye for now.
